Gentleheat asked Colin Coleman, Owner and Lead Physiotherapist of ‘Causeway Physio’ to explain the benefits of heat therapy. Below is what Colin had to say:
“Working as a physiotherapist in private practice I treat people suffering from a wide range of painful conditions every day.
Heat therapy is one of the treatments I recommend, day-in, day-out. It’s a safe, fast and effective way to relieve pain and stiffness in a painful joint or muscle. Heat therapy is safe to apply at home or in the office and frequently forms an integral part in the physiotherapy management of common problems such as back pain, muscle spasm, osteo-arthritis, disc injuries, fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis and many more.
One of the most common sources of pain is muscle spasm in the neck or low back. The sensation from muscle spasm can vary from mild discomfort to excruciating knife like pain. Heat therapy can help relieve even severe muscle spasm leading to better movement and less pain.
Heat therapy causes an opening of the blood vessels within the soft tissues where the treatment is applied. The increased blood flow brings oxygen & nutrition to the site of injury helping the healing process. While heat therapy is being applied thermal receptors within the skin are stimulated which reduces the sensation of pain – clever, eh!?
One of my frustrations as a physiotherapist is when my patients say, “heat was great while it was on, but 10 minutes after I took it off, my neck seized up again”. Gentleheat provides a long lasting constant heat source providing all the benefits of heat therapy.
As winter approaches and the temperatures drop I will see more patients experiencing an increase in their arthritic low back pain. I look forward to being able to recommend a product that will provide people with long lasting benefits of heat even while they are on the move.
Thanks, Gentleheat! “
